Backup, export, import.
Your data lives in this browser unless you sync it. A backup is the way to move it or protect it.
Export JSON
Settings, Data, Export JSON downloads one file with your memos, projects and to-dos. It includes the fields app, version, exportedAt, memos, projects and items. Audio is not included.
Import JSON
Settings, Data, Import JSON reads a backup. Ramble checks the whole file before it writes anything, so a bad file cannot half-apply. Then it merges by id:
- A memo keeps whichever copy was edited last.
- Items and projects have no edit time, so the backup's copy replaces the stored one.
The same file works in local mode and in a Supabase account, so you can move local data into an account this way.
Encrypted backup
Settings, Data, Export encrypted asks for a passphrase of at least 10 characters, then downloads a file named ramble-<date>.encrypted.json. The file is encrypted in your browser: the passphrase is stretched with PBKDF2-SHA-256 (600,000 iterations) into an AES-256-GCM key. The passphrase is never stored or sent anywhere.
A lost passphrase cannot be recovered by anyone, including you and us. Keep it somewhere safe. Audio is not included, same as the plain export.
Import JSON detects an encrypted file and asks for the passphrase. A wrong passphrase, or a file that was changed after export, is refused and nothing is written.
Export Markdown
Settings can export all memos as one readable Markdown document with a heading for each day. The calendar day panel copies or downloads a single day, and the digest exports as Markdown too.
Import Markdown
Settings, Data, Import Markdown takes one or more .md or text files (up to 500 files and 50 MB in total). It reads two kinds:
- Ramble Markdown exports. Titles, dates, topics, highlights, mood, pins and to-dos come back from the metadata in the file. A project link comes back only when you have exactly one project with that name; otherwise the memo is imported without it. For a full restore, including projects, use the JSON backup.
- Plain notes. Each file becomes one memo, and Ramble files it with its usual rules.
You get a preview before anything is written. Memos from a Ramble export that you already have are skipped, matched by their id, and so are repeats within the selection. A plain note is skipped only when the same file name with the same contents was imported before; rename it and it comes in as a new memo. Audio is not part of a Markdown file, so imported memos have none.
Protect my memos
Settings, Storage has "Protect my memos". It asks the browser for persistent storage so it does not evict your data when space is short. If the device runs out of space, Ramble tells you instead of failing silently.
Delete everything
Settings, Data, Delete all data permanently removes every memo, project and to-do held in the current store. It also clears what Ramble keeps only in this browser: saved searches, weekly review drafts and recent searches. Export first if you might want them back.
Undo a delete
Deleting a memo gives you 6 seconds to undo it.
